Rough Week Keeps Rams Motivated Headed into Final Stretch

Rough stretches are always a part of sports, and every team has its ups and downs throughout the course of a season. The Glenwood Rams boys basketball team has become a bit unfamiliar with the ‘down’ part, considering they have only lost six games in the past two full seasons. However, the Rams (11-4, 6-1) might have wandered into some uncharted territory, as they have now lost two games in a row by 25+ points. The silver lining? Those games were against two of the best basketball teams the state of Nebraska has to offer.

Every athlete and coach in most sports refers to the final stretch of the season as a “grind.” But in wrestling, it seems as if that term is exacerbated around this time of year. There’s no doubt that the Glenwood wrestlers are on their late-season grind, making that final effort to finish out their season on a high note.

The Glenwood Girls basketball team continued its historic season this week with two major conference wins. Monday night, the Lady Rams (11-4, 7-1) traveled to Shenandoah to take on the Fillies in a battle between two of the top squads in the Hawkeye Ten. The game was back and forth the whole way, as Glenwood trailed by a small margin at the conclusion of every quarter. However, a 28-point fourth quarter allowed the Rams to come away with a 62-53 victory. Glenwood followed up their road conference win with a home date against the Lewis Central Titans.

The Glenwood girls basketball team earned its third straight win in blowout fashion, taking down Kuemper 74-40 on the road. The Lady Rams were led by the young duo of sophomore Elle Scarborough and freshman Madison Camden, who finished with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Brooklyn Taylor was the last Ram in double figures, dropping 10 points on the night. The Lady Rams are now 7-3 on the season, their best start since the 2013-14 season. With this win, Glenwood now sits at third place in the Hawkeye Ten with a 3-1 conference record, behind Lewis Central and Denison.

The Glenwood boys basketball team picked up right where they left off prior to the Winter Break. The Rams dominated every facet of their Hawkeye Ten bout with Kuemper, winning 84-62 and picking up their fourth straight victory. Glenwood was led by Christian Stanislav, who finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Not far behind was sophomore Ryan Blum, who posted his best game of the season, knocking down six three-pointers to finish with 29 points in total. Zach Carr rounded out Glenwood’s “big 3” with 17 points on the night.

The Glenwood wrestling team is still settling into the new season as they are struggling to find wins both individually and as a team. The Rams picked up one win but suffered two losses in their home dual last week. Glenwood defeated Treynor by a score of 56-22, but lost to both Underwood and Creston by double-digit margins. Glenwood sits in the middle of the pack in the Hawkeye Ten, currently tied for 6th place with Creston and Kuemper.

Last week the Glenwood girls basketball team suffered its third loss of the season to a very good Denison team. The Lady Rams jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold on, as the Monarchs finished with four players in double figures on the night. Glenwood was led by the duo of Brielle Smith and Elle Scarborough, both of whom finished with 14 points on the night.

The Glenwood boys basketball team got back to its winning ways over the last two games. After starting 3-2 and coming off a frustrating loss in Atlantic a week ago, Glenwood returned home for a battle with Hawkeye Ten foe Denison. The Monarchs entered the game flying high with upsets over Lewis Central, Carroll and Harlan, but ultimately could not handle Glenwood's merciless press and fast-paced offense. The Rams were victorious by a score of 68-45.

Saying Glenwood’s start to the season has been a rollercoaster is an understatement. The Rams currently hold a 3-2 record with wins over Thomas Jefferson (74-52), Creston (73-51) and Saint Albert (61-43), and losses on the road against Lewis Central (59-75) and Atlantic (74-85). Glenwood’s up-and-down season has come with its triumphs as well as its perils, as the Rams have shown flashes of greatness amidst struggles.

Glenwood girls basketball fell just short of pulling off a major upset in Hawkeye Ten Tuesday Night. The Lady Rams had Lewis Central on the ropes through the whole game, but in the end the Titans snuck out a 53-47 victory. Glenwood led through the entire first half, but Lewis Central found their rhythm in the third quarter, taking their first lead. The Titans never wavered, despite Glenwood's ability to keep it close down to the final whistle. The Lady Rams were led by Brielle Smith, who went 5-8 from the field and a perfect 3-3 at the free throw line.
